Dutch Sweets
Booklet: 10 Dutch Traditional Sweets
In the Netherlands it is perfectly normal to enjoy a ‘jew cookie’, a ‘negro kiss’ or a ‘moor’s head’. Many of these typical Dutch sweets are centuries old and part of Dutch heritage. An outdated and perhaps racist tradition? Or should we be proud of these unique names. Ruben Pater and I collected these strange sweets in the book ‘Dutch Sweets’ which also explores the origins of the names. It turns out ‘jew cookies’ are called ‘Dutch cookies’ outside Holland and the ‘negro kiss’ originates from Denmark.
